Welcome Back.
I am soooooo excited about this coming year. I hope you have had a wonderful summer, now ready to begin chapter three in your child's life. It's been said, ”K-2nd grade your child has learned to read, now 3rd grade on your child will read to learn."
My name is Mrs. Cain. Parents can call me Ruth. I have been married 24 years and have 4 children. We moved to Florida in 1995. I love teaching and watching children learn. Our classroom will be fun, but I will have high expectations of every child.
The first week we learn all the routines that we need to know to help make our classroom work to its full potential for the year. We will go over procedures and safety issues.
There is a lot of new material learned in the third grade. The parents' help and support is vital to make this a successful year. Homework is a must to make sure your child is not left behind. Your participation in your child's education is so important. Make sure you have a regular place and time to do homework. Your help in the classroom will be appreciated. I know everyone is busy, but please take the time on recognition days to help your child feel important.
If you have any concerns or questions call me at school during my planning time, 361-6200. If I am out, please leave a voice-mail. I return phone calls promptly. You can always reach me at my e-mail address: ruth_cain@sarasota.k12.fl.us I have a web site at www.ruthcain.com.
If there are any concerns or worries that your child has, let me know immediately. I'm a parent, too. I know how important your child's concerns are. I want your child to feel comfortable, safe, important, and challenged.
Let's make this a successful year.
Mrs. Cain
A homework packet will come home on Monday's. You need to check the box and sign your initials after your child completes that assignment. Your child may work ahead on assignments. Spelling worksheets are due on Tuesday. Language Arts (Grammar worksheets) are due on Wednesday. The Phonics worksheets are due on Friday. Check your Student Handbook for the school's policy on homework requirements if your child has been sick. Math assignments will come home via the Agenda Book. Math Facts should be studied 5 minutes a night three times a week. The Wordly Wise Vocabulary book is new this year. Again we will be asking you to make sure you child is building his/ her vocabulary. The Phonics Reader needs to be read at least 2 times per week. If you see your child cannot finish in 20 minutes read to them. The Phonics Reader counts as part of the 20 minutes of reading time. Your child should earn 2 AR points per week. One point should come from reading at home and the other point from reading at school. Your child should return the Homework for the Week chart with him/her on Friday. If all assignments have been done on time, your child has the privilege of Fun Friday. A reading log will be kept of home and school reading.
Your child's reading grade will be 80% class work, 10% homework and 10% AR. The Spelling Grade will be 90% test and 10% homework. Math, Science and Social Studies will be 90% class work and 10% homework. The Science Grade will differ the first quarter because of the Science Fair Project.
It is the school's policy that if your child misses school, you need to write a note stating your child has been sick, etc. Please do not write this note in the Agenda Book. Make a separate note so I can send it to the office.
For children completing all homework in a week they have earned Fun Friday. I will give them 30 minutes on Friday to play. They can bring in dolls, board games, etc. Follow schools policy on what they may bring.
On Friday we will have tests. The Spelling and Language Arts tests will be given on Friday. Make sure you review Family Times on Thursday night.
